I have been a voracious reader my whole life. When I was younger I could not go anywhere without my current book. These days I still read as much as I can. My husband teases me because I go to the library once a month and get around ten books, which last all of a week or so. My love of reading was encouraged by my Mom, she homeschooled my brothers and I and read books to us all the time. We started with the Chronicles of Narnia and as we grew older she would read books like Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens. She also read us The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All that started my life-long love of Middle Earth, Narnia and other fantasy lands. We also grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogy and The Princess Bride. I think my parents probably got tired of Star Wars since my brothers and I would pick one of the three movies almost every Friday night for a while! One of my earliest memories of playing dress-up involved me being Princess Leia and my brother Mark was Luke. I grew up loving dressing up as different characters and my Mom is a great seamstress so I was never short of costumes. Over the years I was a pilgrim, a pioneer, an Indian and many more.
When we moved to South Carolina in the 1990’s my middle brother and I got involved at a colonial plantation called Brattonsville. My mom sewed us historically accurate costumes and we were able to help portray different parts of daily colonial life. My brother worked on the farm and I did a lot of carding wool. Right after we moved away to Arkansas Mel Gibson filmed part of the Patriot at Brattonsville! You can imagine how disappointed we were to miss that… After moving from South Carolina I got involved in a Civil War re-enactment group. I learned how hard it was to walk and sit in a hoop skirt and spent a lot of fun evenings dancing the Virginia Reel with the soldier re-enactors. At one re-enactment I even got to smuggle food to “prisoners” right under the noses of the guards!
My mom encouraged me to do my own sewing as I grew older and I sewed several dresses and skirts for church and formal wear. The first costume I made was a gypsy outfit for a college Halloween party. It was great fun! But then I graduated, got my first job, got married and had two kids. So I didn’t do much sewing at all for a few years. Then this past year my parents gave me a new sewing machine for Christmas and I finally have the opportunity to get back into sewing. My kids are old enough that they don’t need constant supervision so now I have time to work on projects again!
I am still a huge Lord of the Rings and Star Wars fan! I have an overflowing shelf of Star Wars books that I keep adding to and just added The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien to my Inklings collection, as I call it (see this link for information on the Inklings). I also love RPG computer games (some MMO, some single player), crocheting, drawing on occasion and being a stay-at-home Mom. Most importantly, I love God and I try to live out my Christian faith every day. Some days I don’t do very well but I am so thankful for a gracious God who is infinitely patient and loving as well as just and holy. I really would be nothing without Him!
Here are some of my very favorite books/authors/movies/shows/computer games:
The Bible – I know it sounds like a pat answer, but seriously what could be more cool than reading God’s own Words!?!
Anything by Tolkien!
Anything by C.S. Lewis!
Dorothy Sayers – specifically the Lord Peter Wimsey books
Timothy Zahn – the best Sc-fi writer I have read so far.
Robin Mckinley – she wrote two versions of my favorite fairy tale, how could I not love her books?? (Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale, partly because Belle loves books as much as I do!)
Dee Henderson – I love suspense/mystery books where the characters pray instead of curse when things go wrong.
Jane Austen – Persuasion is my favorite!
Kristin Britain – Fantasy and horses, how could you go wrong? 😉
The Princess Bride by William Goldman (and the movie, of course)
Anything by Agatha Christie!
The original Star Wars trilogy – the newer trilogy is okay but who thought a whiny kid would make a good Darth Vader?? I mean, it sort of makes Darth Vader seem wimpy after seeing that…
All the new Marvel movies! (Iron Man (except for number 2), Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy)
All the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit movies!! Watching them is like meeting old friends in person for the first time (I know, I’m weird). Even if some things are changed I still love the movies.
Favorite TV Shows – NCIS!!!, Castle, Chuck, Sherlock, Veronica Mars
Favorite Computer Games – Guild Wars 2, the Mass Effect games (except for the last five minutes or so of Mass Effect 3, who thought that was a good idea!?!?), the Dragon Age games, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars The Old Republic, Tomb Raider.
And there you have a little bit about me, which turned into a lot about me. I hope you enjoy seeing what I create, whether it is sewing clothes, drawing maps or whatever other creative things I come up with. Thanks for reading!
